Lying on the Gulf of Bourgas, some 30 km South-East from the city of Bourgas and 330 km form Istanbul, you can find the resort of Sozopol.
It is one of Ancient Greece's oldest settlements, formerly known as 'Apollonia Pontica' - named after Apollo, the patron of seafarers. Today it resembles a cluster of welcoming turn-of-the century houses, interspersed with small gardens, with a population of 5,000.
The resort provides two fine, sandy beaches, set off nicely against the tranquil charm of fishing life. One lies within a sheltered bay called "the Town beach" and is the smaller and closer to the Old Town. The second, larger beach called Harmanite, extends southwards and is easily acceced from the New Town. Sozopol is traversed by beautiful narrow lanes, old houses - most of which become small family hotels in summer and its romantic charm has attracted artists and writers throughout the centuries.

The town itself is split in two – The Old Town (lying on the peninsula) is separated from the new town by a pretty park, which houses some attractive churches. Near by stands Sozopol’s well-stocked archaeological museum, where you can see perhaps Bulgaria’s best display of Greek vases. The Church of The Holly Virgin and the two local art galleries are well worth a visit.
The Old Town of Sozopol is the lively part. All the picturesque old houses (some more than 150 years old), cobblestone streets flooded with souveniers shops, attractive sea-terrace restaurants and plentiful cafes & pastry shops, offer tourists unforgettable moments. The Apollonia Festival of Arts staged here every September gathers artists from all over the world and is indeed the busiest time of the year. |

Accommodation in Sozopol consists of rooms and apartments in private houses, and a large number of newly built small family hotels, both in the Old and the New town. There are also several new 3 and 4-stars hotels at the Harmanite beach area and at the Golden Fish beach area. In the Old Town - on the peninsula, rooms in the old houses can also be hired at very reasonable prices (20+ EUR/bed/night), but availability is limited in peak season 20 July - 30 August. Hotel rates in Sozopol are still relatively lower than those at Sunny Beach and the small fishing town vacation speaks for a different beach holiday experience well worth thinking about.
Excursions from Sozopol: Different interesting excursions are organized daily from Sozopol to Ropotamo River, Nessebar, Bulgarian Village with dinner/lunch, Yacht picnic. There is even a day trip to Istanbul for the shopping enthusiasts.
