Bulgarian Ski Complex Threatens Rila National Park

Situated at 1,350m above sea level on the northern slopes of Rila Mountain among age-old pinewoods, BOROVETS is located at the foot of peak Moussala (2,925m) - the highest one on the Balkan Peninsula. Borovets is easily accessible, being at a distance of 75 km from Sofia. Established at the end of 19th century as a hunting place for the Bulgarian tzars, Borovets gradually developed into a modern ski resort of high class with mid-range and luxury hotels, haute-cuisine restaurants and varied leisure-time entertainment opportunities besides an excellent network of ski runs and lifts along the slopes of the Rila Mountain, capable of servicing about 11,000 tourists per hour.

BOROVETS is the Alpine resort among Bulgarian winter resorts, providing excellent opportunities for the whole range of winter sports - from the Alpine sports to cross-country skiing, ski-jumps and biathlon. The resort has twice hosted Word Cup Alpine skiing rounds, while its biathlon track is among one of the best in the word. The slopes of Borovets have a permanent snow cover of more than 1.5 meters on average, from late November to early May.

The air in Borovets is crystal-clear and totally free of any pollutants while the average temperature during January, the coldest month, is minus 4.6o C.

The slopes and runs are maintained in perfect conditions and are designated with international markings and multilingual signs. A snow gun machines are also available.

The organized trips lead to picturesque spots in the Rila Mountain like the Seven Rila Lakes, peak Malyovitsa, peak Moussala, etc. A photo safari and a visit to the Bulgarian tzars residence of Bistritza are also regularly organized.
