Bulgarian Ski Complex Threatens Rila National Park

Chepelare is located in the southern part of Bulgaria, in the heart of the beautiful Rhodopi mountains on altitude of 1,200 m above sea level. The winter season here provides one of the best skiing conditions in Bulgaria from mid December till mid April. The rich culture and history has turned Chepelare and the surrounding area into the economic and cultural center of the Rhodopi mountains.

The distance to the capital of Bulgaria, Sofia is 230 km and 80 km to the second largest city in Bulgaria, Plovdiv. The world famous ski resort of Pamporovo is just 10 kilometers down the road and is one of the reasons this area has long been one of the most popular winter tourist destinations in Bulgaria.

The summer in the beautiful Rhodopi mountains is cool and tranquil and provide the perfect spot for relaxing, hiking, mountain biking and village tourism.

  • Mechi Chal Ski Runs Map

    Mechi Chal (Bear Mountain) is the name of the highest peak near Chepelare that has ski runs open from December through April depending on the snow. The peak is at an altitude of 1,873 m and is serviced by a 2-person chair lift with a maximum capacity of 700 people per hour and a few smaller drag/towrope lifts. The runs vary in difficulty from black to green and are some of the longest in Bulgaria. There are a total of 11,400 m of ski runs are three main ski tracks:

    Mechi Chal 1 is a black level run and is 3,150 m long and 50 m wide, with a total elevation change of 720 m. It is qualified to be used for international competitions.

    Mechi Chal 2 is a combination of red/green run, and is 5,250 m long and 25 m wide, with a total elevation change of 720 m.

    The cross country track is 3,000 meters long, located at an altitude of 1,282 m above sea level. Nearby, there is also a 5 km biathlon track. The ski runs are linked, permitting easy crossing from one run to another.
